Drum Major Auditions

Drum major auditions will be held January 18th. If you are planning on auditioning check back for more info. Everyone else that is planning on doing marching band next year, plan on attending for a small portion in order to play for those auditioning. That afternoon will also be our DCI party, followed by the boys basketball game against Bingham. It should be a fun day so mark it on your calendars and good luck to those that will be auditioning.
Mr. Mangum

Pep Band

The pep band schedule is now available! We start playing at games beginning in January and into February. All games listed are REQUIRED for HHS marching band students. Middle school marching band students are not required to participate, but are strongly encouraged to join when they can.

Anyone that will be attending Herriman High is invited to join for any of the games (7-12 grade). Please invite any friends that can play to come have fun with us!

The dates listed will not be removed, though there may be a few extra that are added. Keep checking back for updates.

Fundraiser Stuff

Please bring your fundraiser forms to class on Wednesday or Thursday and the class president will collect them and take them to Mrs. Willmore. I will be back in class on Thursday, and maybe my little girl will have a name by then.

New rehearsal schedule

I am sorry for the late update to the blog and any confusion that the last post may have caused. We will now be rehearsing on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 6:30 at Ft. Herriman and on Wednesdays from 5-8 at Herriman High.

The schedule for next week will be slightly modified, we will be rehearsing on Tuesday instead of Monday due to the Labor Day holiday. The rehearsal will be from 5-8.

Rehearsals this week

Just a quick reminder about this weeks rehearsals for marching band. We will be rehearsing on Tuesday, August 24th from 3 to 6 PM. As of tonight we will now be rehearsing on Saturday morning from 7 to 10 AM. For now plan on Monarch Meadows for both, but be checking back for a change on Saturday's rehearsal.

Thank you for your hard work up to this point! The pep band sounded awesome at the game! I am so excited with the growth you all made musically during band camp. Be proud of what you have done, and start getting excited about the upcoming competition season because you will make a very big splash. I am very proud of you guys. One last reminder, we still need two people to fill holes in the drill so make sure you are putting the word out there.

Thanks,

Awesome Job!

What a terrific night! Our first ever potato social turned out to be a huge success. Great performance by the band! Awesome turnout at the event! Great food preparation and serving! the silent auction went splendidly! I just can't thank everybody enough for their many, many, many contributions to make last night such a huge success! It really was wonderful. I think we will be making it an annual event to help raise money for the marching band and those that participate in it. Thank you all so much!

Band fundraiser

The marching band fundraiser is quickly approaching and there are just a few things that need to be taken care of. Expect to see an e-mail from one of the members of the booster board soon mentioning these issues.

We will need some help cooking potatoes, chili and cookies for the event. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Also, please make sure all money is submitted by the end of band on Tuesday. There are a few students that have been able to raise enough funds with this one event to cover nearly all the costs of marching band. Feel free to invite all your family, neighbors and friends. It should be a great deal of fun!

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night and thank you all so much for your contributions to the band so far, it has been a great help to all the band students.

Thursday night rehearsal

Alright, here is the scoop on the DCI event. It will be Thursday evening, not Friday. So, on Thursday there will be a bit of a change to the rehearsal schedule. We will still start at 7 and go until 12. Please bring a lunch so we can start rehearsal at the high school at 1. We will end rehearsal at 4:00 in order to give everyone a chance to get to Jordan Landing for the show "DCI: Big, Loud and Live" it is a long one, from 4:30 til 10 or so. It is a quarterfinals event, not the finals. I am not sure on the cost, but plan on about $10. I am not requiring anyone to go, but I am strongly recommending that everyone in marching band attend. If any parents or family would like to join us, we would love to have you. Please let me know tomorrow if you would like to go so we can maybe get a group discount or at least get seats together. I will definitely be there and hope you will be too!
Mr. Mangum

Rehearsal for Monday

Marching band will be rehearsing at Butterfield Park at 7 AM on Monday morning. We might be practicing at Ft. Herriman later in the week, so be ready to make the change if necessary. The morning rehearsal will end at 11. Any seniors in the band, please take care of your registration after that rehearsal, you should have enough time. The same goes for juniors and sophomores, you should have enough time to get your registration taken care of after the morning rehearsal is over. I spoke with the counselors and they said it is not a problem if you don't go during your assigned time alphabetically. E-mail me if you have any questions.

The 1 o'clock rehearsal will be in the band room at Herriman High School! I just received the go ahead to have rehearsal there, so we will finally get to use our own room! If you need help finding it, please stop by the main office and they will direct you. Once you have found it, please help others find it as well. I will be in a meeting just before rehearsal, so please help each other out.

The evening rehearsal (6 PM) will be back at Butterfield Park.

Please make sure you are prepared with plenty of water, proper foot wear and sunscreen.

I look forward to seeing you all again on Monday, enjoy your weekend!

Band Booster Meeting

I just realized that in my last post I said the band booster meeting was on Aug 2. Please disregard that information. We will be meeting TUESDAY, August 3 from 7-8:30. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. I look forward to seeing you then.
Thanks

A few updates and reminders

First off, we will be having one more booster meeting before band camp begins. We will be meeting Aug. 2 at 7 PM. The meeting shouldn't be too long this time, we will be discussing the needs for the volunteers during the marching band season and election of a booster board. We will keep the booster board simple this year, we will need a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer with representatives for color guard and band. Please plan on meeting at Main Street Park again unless you hear otherwise.

As I announced in band rehearsal last week, there will be a leadership and drumline clinic at the University of Utah on Aug 2 and 3. I contacted Dr. Brian Sproul and he said that anyone interested in attending still can. All you need to do is show up on the 2nd with your money in hand. I am still trying to find out the place where you will be meeting, but everyone is welcome to attend. Plan on $35 for both days. E-mail me with any questions. This should be a great event to meet other marching band folks around the state.

Finally, next weeks rehearsals. We will plan on meeting at Butterfield Park. Remember, Tuesday's rehearsal is 8-4, bring your own lunch. Wednesday will be 8-12. Please make sure you come well hydrated , ready to work and have fun. Your music for Ecstasy of Gold should be memorized by Tuesday. Invite anyone you know that may want to participate.

Have a great weekend! I'll see you next Tuesday!

Calendar update

I hope the calendar is now viewable for everyone. Please note dates and times from this calendar and disregard any prior dates/times that you have received. This is and will be the correct information. Please check back occasionally, there may be calendar changes. THanks for your patience with this!
Mr. Mangum

Marching band potato social update

A couple of quick reminders about the fundraiser coming up.

1 - You are responsible for the tickets you picked up. You must either return a check or the ticket. Checks must be made out to Herriman High School. Please do not accept cash, it can be lost very easily. Invite your family (including aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc.), neighbors (no door to door sales), and friends. Remember the more tickets you sell, the more money you will have to cover your fall band fees. It will also get the band closer to getting uniforms!

2 - I forgot to mention that there will be a silent auction. Each student should enter something to be auctioned. It can be anything from a homemade craft to some sort of service (lawn mowing, babysitting, etc.). For the auction, all profits for the goods or services you donate will go directly to you. I expect everyone to enter one item for the auction. Parents may also enter something as well, again any proceeds from the auction will go directly to your child's account. Please let me know ASAP about your auction item so I can get the a list compiled in preparation for the 18th.

3 - We will be performing that night, so you will be expected to be there as well. You will not need to pay for your own entrance, but your family will.

4 - If you have any questions or need any more tickets, please e-mail me at shawn.mangum@herrimanhigh.org.

Thank you! Have a wonderful week!

See you tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience with this, once we have a school to use things should be quite a bit smoother.

Summer band info and reminder

Hello again! I hope your last days of school are going great. We have less than two weeks until our first rehearsal! I just wanted to make sure that everybody is ready for it. Here are a few things to remember.

1 - Proper footwear. Marching band is a demanding physical activity. Please make sure you are wearing comfortable athletic shoes. ***

2 - Proper clothing. Wear clothes that will be comfortable to exercise in. We will be running and doing other physical activity along with our daily marching. Shorts must be appropriate length. If there is any clothing deemed inappropriate by any of the instructors you will be asked to go home and change. We will be outside all the time due to the school situation. Please be prepared with a jacket in case in gets a bit rainy. We will be working under a large pavillion if it does, but it may be chilly.

3 - Sun protection - Please have sun glasses, hats, handkerchiefs, sunscreen and any other items to protect you from the sun. Like I said before, we will be outside all the time, so you need to be protected from the sun.

4 - Hydrate - Drink water! We need to be safe, so come well watered! Bring a water bottle with cold water in it.

*** All horn line and drum line students will need khaki shorts, white tennis shoes and white ankle socks for the parade uniform. This is not included in the summer band fee and must be provided by the student. The shirt is included in the summer band fee and will be provided. Shorts must be within 3 inches of the knee, above or below. Rehearsals are a great way to break in new shoes, so start wearing them to rehearsals as early as you can.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

I will see you on June 14, 7:30 AM. DO NOT BE LATE!

Jordan School District Board Meeting Update

I would like to sincerely thank all of you that expressed interest and concern over the purchase of the instruments for the marching and pep bands. It was great to see such a great deal of support.

Last night at the board meeting the purchase of the sousaphones, baritones, mellophones and drumline equipment was all approved! That was great news for me, and I am sure it is for anyone that has any interest in the success of the band program.

Once again, thank you to those that came to the meeting and expressed your concern about the matter. Have a wonderful evening!

Jordan School District Board Meeting

Thanks to everyone that came to our student/parent meeting! I was glad to meet so many in our band family. I look forward to working with each of you more in the future and meeting those that were unable to make it last night.

In our discussion last night I mentioned that the Jordan School District Board would be meeting tonight, and in that meeting they will be discussing the purchase of marching band instruments for Herriman High. They will be meeting at 7 PM in the dirstrict auxiliary services building at 7905 S Redwood Road. If you can make it, I would love to see you. I was able to adjust my schedule so I can make it, so if you are able to come as well please come congregate with me and any others that will be there. If you would like to make any comments, please show up a little before 7 to sign up on a comment list.

Thank you all for your help! I look forward to seeing you tonight!

Parent/student meeting

Hello and Happy Mothers Day! I have been busy visiting all day so I was unable to update the blog until now. I can't get the map to format correctly for the page so you will need to check the address out on Google maps or Mapquest. The address of the park is 13000 S 5900 W in Herriman. We will be meeting from 6-8 PM. It may be a bit chilly and there is a chance of rain, so come prepared. I look forward to meeting you all on Monday!

Monday, May 10

Hello everybody! I hope everyone is doing wonderfully! I just wanted to put a reminder out there about what will be happening on Monday, May 10.

First, there will be drum line auditions at Ft. Herriman from 3 til 5. These auditions are for ALL students that wish to participate on the drum line at Herriman High. The audition is simply to determine instruments and parts. We will not be excluding anyone that would like to participate. Make sure you download and prepare BOTH pieces with the prescribed grip - match or traditional. This will be part of what will be determining who plays what instrument. Prepare the pieces as best you can and good luck!

The drum major auditions will not be happening on the 10th. I apologize for the late notice, but I was unable to post the materials to provide sufficient prep time, so the auditions will be postponed until a later date. If you have not already let me know that you are interested in auditioning, please e-mail me as soon as possible. Thanks.

We will also be holding our student/parent meeting that evening from 6 til 8. We will be meeting at Main Street Park in Herriman. I will post a map, or a link to a map before we have the meeting so everyone will be able to find it easily. There will be pizza and drinks. Please remember this meeting is for ALL students who will be participating in ANY of the ensembles at Herriman High next year. That means all orchestra and band students, and any middle school students participating in marching band are invited to attend.

I look forward to meeting everyone on Monday, and thank you for your patience with blog communication. I understand it isn't the most efficient, but it is what we have to work with at the moment.

Drum line audition materials

Here are the drum line audition materials. All auditions will be performed on the snare drum only. The Connecticut Halftime selection is to be performed with a match grip and the Drum Corps On Parade selection is to be performed with traditional grip. Click on the links below to be taken to a site to download a .pdf file of each tune. It is pretty simple, hopefully. The download button is fairly large and is located just right of center if you have any difficulty seeing it. If the links aren't working for you, please e-mail me at hhsinstrumental@hotmail.com and I will e-mail you the files as an attatchment. Please let anyone you know that may be interested in auditioning that they need to download these materials for the audition.

Remember, there will only be one audition date for drum line. It will be Monday, May 10 from 3 to 5 PM in the band room at Ft. Herriman Middle School. If you want to play on the drum line, but for some reason you can't make it that day, please e-mail me so we can work something out. That night will also be the student/parent meeting at Main Street Park in Herriman. I look forward to seeing you then!

Drum line and Drum major auditions

Drum line and drum major auditions will be held May 10 from 3 to 5 PM at Ft. Herriman Middle School. This will be the only audition date for all participants in the marching band, so plan on this date if you want to audition. The drum line auditions will be held with Spencer Frohm, the drum line instructor. Drum major auditions will be held with me. There will be more information regarding the auditions coming soon.

Music parent meeting update

The music parent meeting that I had initially scheduled for the 18th of May actually will be happening on the 10th of May. It will still be located at the same place, Main Street Park in Herriman, and at the same time, 6 PM. There will still be pizza and drinks.

I look forward to seeing you on May 10!

Auditions updates

There will be one more audition date for concert and jazz ensembles held at Ft. Herriman Middle School. It will be held on Friday, April 23 from 3 to 7 PM. This audition is open to ANYONE wanting to audition for Herriman High. Students from Riverton High will need to audition on this day because there will not be auditions at your school. Students from Bingham High and South Hills Middle may also audition on this date as well. The audition materials remain the same, 12 major scales and a solo, etude or excerpt that can show off what you are capable of.

I will be visiting the students at Elk Ridge Middle School on Monday the 19th, and will be returning on a later date to conduct auditions. They will more than likely be held during school hours.

If you have any issues with the dates I have posted, please let me know so we can work something out for you.

Marching band fall show

I have some good news regarding the marching band! We have a theme for the fall show finally. We will be working around a Western/Cowboy theme. Specific tunes have not been nailed down yet, but possibilities include music from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, The Magnificent Seven, Blazing Saddles (these are all old cowboy movies if you aren't familiar with them) and maybe something from Aaron Copland like Appalachian Spring or Rodeo. There are some great things we can do with this show so let everybody know! We will need a skilled group of people in the colorguard as well, so if you are interested or know anybody else that might be interested, have them contact me.

I have been discussing our show with our drill writer/music arranger and he would like to know how many people he needs to write for as soon as possible. If you are planning on participating in marching band this fall, please e-mail me and let me know. I have to give him a solid number on those participating as soon as possible. His name is Travis Mills and he will help us put together an awesome show this year.

So to wrap this up, remember to tell anyone interested in colorguard at Herriman to contact me at my e-mail hhsinstrumental@hotmail.com. Also anyone interested in marching in the fall let me know ASAP so our drill can be top notch. The success of our music program is up to each of us, let's make it a year to remember.

Thanks,

Shawn Mangum

Music family meeting

I want to let you all know that I am planning on having a meeting in May to introduce myself and my plan for the instrumental music program at Herriman High. We will discuss goals for the ensembles, including the concert bands and orchestra as well as jazz and marching band.

I want to invite all students that are planning on participating in any of the instrumental ensembles to come along with their parents to discuss what we will be doing. The date, time and location are not yet determined, I just wanted to throw the idea out there so you can be expecting it. I hope to have the details nailed down by next week.

I look forward to meeting you all!

Have a great spring break!

Mr. Mangum

Audition update

Hello everyone! I have heard a few students from auditions at Ft. Herriman and I am getting very excited for the possibilities we will have starting this summer.

A quick update on auditions. There will be a make-up audition date at Ft. Herriman coming soon, no specific date though. Auditions dates at Riverton and Elk Ridge are still being finalized. Thank you for your patience.

Percussionists should plan on playing scales and solo on a keyboard instrument. Plan on playing rudiments and a solo/excerpt on the snare. If you want to play set in the jazz band be prepared to play a basic swing, rock and latin beat. If you are wanting to be a part of the drumline in marching band there will be auditions specifc for that ensemble at a later date with the drumline instructor.

Parade band

I almost forgot some exciting news. Herriman High will have a marching band for parades this summer and we will be marching in the Herriman City parade on June 26th as well as a couple others. I will keep you posted on developments with the parade band and when you will be able to sign up. We want to make a great debut, so make sure you are there! There will be a need for wind and percussion players, as well as drum majors and color guard. If you play a string instrument and would like to get involved there are plenty of opportunities for you as well.

More soon!

Mr. Mangum

Audition Dates

I have some preliminary information for audition dates finally. Ft. Herriman students will be auditioning March 15,16 and 19 from 3 to 6 pm. Those dates are for band and orchestra. The auditions will be in the instrumental music room at Ft. Herriman.

Audition dates at South Hills and Elk Ridge are still being determined, but will likely be the last week of May.
